How to Create Narrative Short Film Using Smartphone

Do you want to create a short narrative film but don’t have the budget for a grand scale production? With smartphone technology nowadays, you can create a full length film just using your mobile device. Movies and Shorts like Searching for Sugarman, Snow Steam Iron, Detour and Unsane to name a few, you won’t even think that these were done using a Smartphone. This is a beginner course that will help you get started, covering the film process from concept to completion.

This course provides live instructor-led lecture and discussion, student participation through shooting and editing assignments using Zoom, Google Classroom, shooting equipment and editing application.

Session/Day

Lessons

Day 1

  • PCCI Anywhere Orientation
  • Set parameters based on convenient characters and locations
  • Narrative structure: a cursory exploration of the Hero’s Journey, 3 Act Structure, and Save the Cat – Brainstorm as a cohort, brainstorm as individuals

Day 2

  • Present individual concepts for peer review
  • Cohort takes all of the ‘bad’ ideas and workshops the major beats for 3-5 story lines.
  • Case study – analyze and deconstruct a short film
  • Intro to how to direct: production design, camera movement, camera angles, acting, sound design, and editing.
  • Individuals continue to brain storm story lines considering production design, cinematography, sound design, and editing – basic storyboard

Day 3

  • Participants will present storyboards to cohort for peer review
  • Cohort will finalize brainstorm and storyboard major beats of 3-5 story lines
  • Participants finalize their creative treatments to include production design, storyboards, production schedules

Day 4

  • Workflow – Organizing your files
  • Introduction to editing

Day 5

  • Rough Cuts and Peer Review

Day 6

  • Final Cuts

Disclaimer: Instructor may adjust the lessons covered based on the class progress and the number of participants.

Prerequisite:

This course is for anyone interested in filmmaking.

Requirements:

  1. Participants should have access to their own equipment. Any camera or a cell phone with video function will do.
  2. Editing will be done via computer or even with a cellphone with a free editing app.
  3. Students must also have the following: Zoom application, Gmail account (for Google Classroom) and stable internet connection.
